About Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are a valuable alternative to an uncomfortable prosthesis. The implants themselves look like screws produced from titanium that serve a similar purpose to the roots of natural teeth. They are fused to the jawbone and support overdentures like “Teeth In Place™” and dental bridges, helping them to perform like our natural teeth would. Once the implants are put in place, you’ll be able to replace anything from one tooth to a whole set with ease.

Given the numerous benefits and aesthetic qualities Dental Implants offer, they have become the standard of care for tooth replacement today.

Why You should consider Dental Implants.

A little known fact that is incredibly important for you to know is this:  When a tooth is removed from your jawbone, you immediately start to get BONE LOSS in that area.  In fact, more than 50% of the bone can be lost in the first few months following surgery.  BONE LOSS is irreversible and can affect not only that particular site, but also the stabilization of any remaining teeth and the jaws themselves.  There are some cases where bone grafting processes can be done to regain  height and width, but nothing will be as stable as your own bone.  The good news is that dental implants can now be placed immediately after teeth are extracted and prevent bone loss completely.  Also, there are bone grafting techniques that if completed at the time of surgery can prevent formation of defects and provide time for future planning of implants.  If you are considering having a tooth or teeth removed, DO NOT move forward with treatment without understanding how this could affect your future options. the Ballantyne Center for Dental Implants, our doctors can explain in detail how this works and help you make the right decision.

What are the benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are widely regarded as the best treatment for loose dentures. Permanent dental implants can be designed to make dentures much more secure and enable you to smile, eat and talk confidently. Ballantyne Center for Dental Implants can assist you if you have been thinking about investing in implants. The implants act as a foundation for replacement teeth. They won’t decay and are designed to last for the rest of your life. Implants can be used in conjunction with various dental procedures to improve your oral health. Once they are installed, you’re much less likely to face problems with slippage and discomfort.

What are the steps for getting Dental Implants?

The initial step is to meet with one of the doctors at Ballantyne Center for Dental Implants for a free dental implant screening. At this consultation,  the doctor and you will determine whether or not you might be a good candidate, and discuss treatment options in order to create a customized treatment plan just for you. We’ll also discuss costs, financing options if necessary, and timing.  You may be eligible for a FREE 3D CT Scan at your first visit.  Ask us for details.

If you decide that Dental Implants are right for you and would like to proceed, next is a pre-procedure exam with diagnostics as well as a thorough medical and dental history with one of the doctors at Ballantyne Center for Dental Implants. This exam  may include taking models of your teeth to determine the ideal treatment for your condition and digital 3D photographs. Fortunately, we have this technology in our office, so you generally won’t have to visit another dental office.  Almost all dental implant procedures can be completed in our facility, under one roof! We will also discuss various sedation options at this visit that might range from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to General Anesthesia. The exam can usually be completed in less than an hour and once completed, you are ready to schedule your surgery.

On the day of surgery, you’ll come to our office and begin by taking medication to help you relax or even sleep during the procedure. During the actual surgery, any teeth, if required, will be removed. Next the actual dental implants are placed in the jaw bone.

In some procedures, like the All-On-Four, replacement teeth are secured onto the implants immediately after surgical placement of the implants. It’s important you know that you will leave the office with teeth! This is why we can say “teeth in a day.”

Following your surgery, there is a recovery period where the implants will need to heal and fully integrate with your bone and tissue.   During this recovery time most patients experience little if any pain and generally take over the counter medications like Advil™ and Tylenol™.  Because of the advancements in implant coatings full integration into your bone typically takes only a few months.

Who Typically Gets Dental Implants?

Those likely to benefit from Dental Implants include people who have been experiencing problems with conventional dentures or simply people who have lost as much as a single tooth. Implants make life easier for those that have been finding it difficult to chew and enjoy meals and they can slow down the process of tissue and bone loss in the jaw. What’s more is that Dental Implants can even provide a more youthful appearance due to the way they give your facial structure a lift. Furthermore, they will help you to speak more clearly.

What are the specifics for Teeth in a Day Dental Implants?

Traditional approaches to restoring a full arch of teeth usually involved 8 or more dental implants, and as many as 18 months of treatment. This approach typically requires a patient often would be without any teeth or with ill-fitting temporary dentures for more than a year.

This is not true at Ballantyne Center for Dental Implants. There are newer and better techniques. You may have seen or investigated a few of the these new techniques which are promoted under such brand names as: “All-on-Four®”, Clear Choice®, “Teeth In A Day“, “Teeth in an Hour“, “Dental Implants in One Day“, “Teeth In One Day“, “Teeth In One Visit“, and many other one-day implant treatment offerings of a full arch of replacement teeth.

Ballantyne Center for Dental Implants offers a wide range of dental implants solutions, including an approach similar to mini dental implants and the All-on-4 procedure.

What if I want to replace just a single tooth?

If you’re missing just a single tooth, then one implant and one crown can replace it. A dental implant replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root. Replacing one tooth with an implant-supported crown can preserve the integrity of all adjacent teeth and is superior to a traditional tooth-supported dental bridge.

Do you offer Mini Dental Implants?

You may or may not be aware that there is a significant amount of controversy over whether or not mini dental implants are an appropriate way to help patients replace missing teeth. Although traditional mini dental implants may have had their place, they are not a replacement for traditional dental implants. In fact, mini dental implants have a much higher failure rate than do traditional implants. Mini dental implants were designed to be used in specific areas and only in specific circumstances.

In our practice we use a newer alternative to the mini dental implant called Locator Lodi® Dental Implant. This newer dental implant technology is very appropriate to us where mini dental implants may have been used in the past. These dental implants have a larger surface area and more appropriate thread patterns which help reduce failures common to the mini dental implant. They are designed specifically for retention of overdentures. Our SNAP-IN Teeth-In-Place™ overdentures use these dental implants as they are not only more affordable than traditional dental implants, but they can be used in areas where bone levels would not support a traditional implant without additional bone grafting and other expensive procedures.

If you wear dentures, ask us about our Teeth-In-Place™ overdenture option and the Locator Lodi® Dental Implants.

If you are interested in dental implants, get in touch with us today to arrange a consultation. We will speak you in depth about your dental history, your requirements and concerns and explain all your treatment options to you so can come to an informed decision.
